Episode 23 with Dan Steadman

I talk with Dan Steadman, indie film director, writer, casting director, production designer, and so much more.

Dan’s story is perfect for people heading back to writers’ rooms or curious about what the process is like to become a successful independent filmmaker. He doesn’t sugarcoat it here: he started out pitching shows as a writer, and his success required guile and hard work, lots of it. But in a career filled with surreal moments like Jennifer Coolidge in a bubble bath in his rental apartment – it was for work – the touchstone of his success has been kindness: kindness to actors, other filmmakers, the crew on sets, even extras.

As much as I loved hearing that, it thrilled me as well that Dan spent significant time making independent films in my hometown – St. Louis, Gateway to the West – and has nice things to say about the city. Dan even cast a legendary St. Louis Cardinals baseball pitcher – Adam Wainwright, aka Uncle Charlie for his famous – New York Mets fans would say infamous – curveball – in a film. Adam retires this weekend after 18 seasons, all in St. Louis, which is as close to a city-wide party that you could ever hope to get.

So grab your St. Louis-style Imo’s Pizza, your Ted Drewes ice cream, Dan has one of the most motivating stories you could ever hope to find.
